TYPICAL WORK SCHEDULE

The average day of a mechanical engineer in the R&D division of an automobile company:

8 am: Breakfast at office canteen

8:15 am: Look at the day’s activities. Departmental meeting with section head

9:15 am: Tea break

9:25 am to 1:15 pm: talk to design and testing about the points discussed in the morning meeting. Scrutinize drawing of parts under development, made by CAD (computer-aided design) engineers, Go through the simulation and analysis report prepared by design engineers

1:15 pm: Lunch

1:45 pm: Visit testing lab, Monitor progress of products under development

6:30 pm: Head home

SALARY STRUCTURE

Entry-level salaries range from Rs. 1.3 lakh to Rs. 3.15 lakh a year. Your performance and any additional DESIRED QUALITIES you acquire in due course of time will decide your promotions and increments. A mechanical engineer with around 5 year’s work experience makes about Rs. 2.2 lakh to Rs. 5.3 lakh a year and still it depends upon which company you are in.

HOW DO I GET THERE ?

After XII in science (Physics-chemistry-maths), do a four-year part-time) diploma course at a polytechnic. You can also go for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ technician engineering and the associate membership examinations. If you clear this exam, it will give you a qualification at par with a diploma or a degree. The Institution of Engineering (India), too, undertakes such an examination. Getting the best jobs depends on the market value’ of your degree
